Teaching without distraction and no technology (with video) :

So there are school models that are anti-technology and here is one example from my northern neighbors. I see the point but in the schools I work with technology can not be ignored and students will not put them away- so embrace what the students bring. Teach with Technology, but I can see the point in not using technology. It can be a distraction.

Great question, why isn’t computer literacy a standard for the modern world. Its quite frustrating when a high school student doesn’t know how to double space and essay. This is something that is being ignored because of funding and resources.

In next few years we are going to see more schools embrace BYOT, and I can’t wait. However I am concerned about how some students will be at a disadvantage if they can’t afford to keep current with technology.

Ever heard of Sketchnotes? In case you haven’t…it’s visual note-taking. This is a great Powerpoint [and another] explaining the how and what and why.

I’ve been experimenting with sketchnotes for sermon notes, and have been slowly encouraging my students to try it out in class and anytime they’re listening to people talk. Some of them have really grabbed hold of it and love it. I’d like to utilize it more in the future - or at least teach it as a skill.

The Hoodie Question:

So Geraldo Rivera stated:

“I am urging the parents of black and Latino youngsters particularly not to let their children go out wearing hoodies. I think the hoodie is as much responsible for Trayvon Martin’s death as much as George Zimmerman was,” Geraldo Rivera said on “Fox and Friends.”

I will not believe that a hoodie has any blame and to ask students and families to stop wearing hoodies is an excuse and a redirection of the discussion that is needed. Many schools ban the hoodie for a number of reasons, but Mr. Martin’s death raises many questions about why the hoodie has a negative association.

So I ask everyone: What questions should we be asking?
